Pearls In Scripture Last Updated: 02/25/2009 02:14 |
In Matthew 13:45-46, Jesus uses a strange image, the pearl. What's interesting, as Chuck Missler pointed out, is that oysters are not kosher! Deuteronomy 14:10 The Jews didn't value them much; they were a uniquely gentile possession. Matthew 13:45,46 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. We see here an image of the Church. The pearl is the only "jewel" that is the result of a living organism. It grows as a response to irritation. And it is removed from its place of growth to become an item of adornment! Frames of Reference: The church has grown from an irritation - Jesus taking on our sins (2 Corinthians 5:21). He endured so much pain and grief He prayed three times for His cup to pass Him by (Matthew 26:36-42). But the church will grow and eventually be removed from it's place of growth (the harpazo).Pearls of wisdomMatthew 7:6-8 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. I think this says we should observe character before trying to witness. Those with too much pride will resist the Gospel. I think this applies somewhat for the HIStory, Our Future study as well. Many, even Christians, will strongly reel back and even lash out because of it. Not everyone loves our Lord's coming. And to really understand, we must have a heart that is open and searching for the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Gates of Pearls on New JerusalemRevelation 21:21 [Speaking of New Jerusalem] And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
